Summary

The new file path does not exist for file.

Symptoms

When building an InstallShield Express QuickPatch project, the following error may occur:

Error -6491: The new file path '[1]' does not exist for file '[2]'.

[1] is the path for a file, and [2] is the file name.

Cause

This error may occur in any of the following scenarios:

• In the Files view of your QuickPatch project, you specified that you wanted to patch an existing file, and then you selected the appropriate file from a list of original setup files. However, you did not specify the path for the latest version of the updated file.
• The path you specified for a file you are adding to your QuickPatch project is incorrect.
• The location of the file you are adding to your QuickPatch project is incorrect.

Resolution

1. Open the Files view.
2. In the Files To Patch window, click the file name [2] mentioned in the error message. Details about the file are displayed in the window on the right.
3. In the File Settings box or the Updated File box, specify the full path of the file that should be updated on the target system after the patch has been installed. To search for the file, click the ellipsis button (...).
4. Rebuild your installation.

Workaround

To patch an existing file in your installation, perform the following steps. Be sure to perform steps 4 through 6 to avoid generating build error -6491.

1. Open the Files view.
2. In the Files To Patch window, right-click the Files To Patch node and select Patch Existing File. The Select File dialog box opens.
3. Select the file that needs to be patched and then click OK. The file you selected is added as a new node under the Files To Patch node.
4. Select the node of the file you added. The file's properties are listed in the window on the right.
5. In the Updated File box, specify the full path of the file that should be updated on the target system after the patch has been installed. To search for the file, click the ellipsis button (...).
6. Complete any of the file's properties as appropriate.
