This article explains how to troubleshoot Snow Inventory Server issues using a diagnostic PowerShell script. The script performs multiple checks designed to detect problems that may prevent the server from starting, and it produces both on-screen results and summary files for reference and reporting.
How to use the script
- Download the Snow Inventory Health Check script.
- Save the code provided as
SnowInventoryHealthCheck.ps1on the Snow Inventory Server machine. - Open PowerShell with administrative privileges.
- Set the execution policy if required:
- Run the script:
.\SnowInventoryHealthCheck.ps1
The script will display real-time diagnostic output and create two files in the working directory:
- Transcript file: Complete output for analysis.
- Summary file: Condensed results highlighting critical issues and overall assessment.
What the script does
- XML validation for
SnowServer.config: - Confirms the configuration file is well-formed XML.
- Pinpoints invalid lines and highlights the exact position of syntax errors.
- Configuration analysis:
- Extracts
baseAddress, apiAddress, andApiEndpointdetails and verifies correct schemes (HTTP/HTTPS) and ports. - Flags mismatches or suspicious port assignments (e.g., HTTPS on port 80).
- Log review:
- Scans the most recent
snowserver*.logforERROR,FATAL, license expiration warnings, and port conflicts. - Excludes noise lines for clean diagnostics.
- Port availability checks:
- Tests ports defined in logs and configuration for availability.
- Event Viewer analysis:
- Retrieves recent Application and System logs for Snow Inventory errors and warnings.
- Includes .NET Runtime error checks.
- HTTP endpoint testing:
- Verifies connectivity to API and base URLs if the service is running.
- Overall assessment:
- Summarizes findings with either the Critical, Warning, or Healthy severity indicators.
- Provides actionable remediation information based on detected issues.
Executing these steps ensures early detection of critical configuration errors, log anomalies, and network conflicts impacting Snow Inventory Server. The generated summary files allow customers to share results easily for further analysis.
