AWS Waste Reclamation Reports identify unused or underutilized resources such as unattached EBS volumes, unused Elastic IP addresses, and snapshots without originating volumes. Use this workflow in Commander to configure and generate a targeted report that reduces waste and optimizes resource utilization.
Requirements
- AWS PowerShell Module installed on the Commander server.
- An AWS account added to Commander with IAM credentials (do not use Assume Role).
- IAM credentials with at least read permission on the AWS account.
- Advanced property embotics.workflow.script.credentials set to true in Commander.
- Execution Policy on the Commander server may need to be set to Unrestricted.
Steps to configure and run the report
-
On the Commander server, install the AWS PowerShell module if not already present:
Install-Module -Name AWSPowerShell.NetCore -AllowClobber -ForceIf a security error occurs, run:[Net.ServicePointManager]::SecurityProtocol = [Net.SecurityProtocolType]::Tls12 -
Download the workflow file
AWS_Waste_Reclamation_Report.json. -
In Commander Admin UI, navigate to Configuration > System > Advanced.
- Locate the property embotics.workflow.script.credentials and set its value to true.
-
Navigate to Configuration > Command Workflows in Commander Admin UI.
- Click Import at the bottom of the workflow list and select the downloaded
AWS_Waste_Reclamation_Report.json.
- Click Import at the bottom of the workflow list and select the downloaded
-
After importing the workflow, select it and edit Step #3 to add the recipient email address for report delivery.
-
To run the report:
- In Views, select the AWS account in inventory.
- Right-click the account and choose Run Workflow > AWS Waste Reclamation Report.
-
Once the workflow completes, the specified recipient receives an email with a hyperlink to the HTML-based report. If re-run, the report updates the existing version. Print the report if required.
Troubleshooting
- If the report runs but is empty or the workflow fails:
- Confirm the AWS PowerShell module is installed correctly.
- Confirm the report path is correct.
- Download the Commander diagnostic package from Help > Support.
- Review the latest entries in
commander.log.
Outcome
After successful execution, you receive a detailed HTML report that lists unused Elastic IPs, unattached EBS volumes, and orphaned snapshots, enabling AWS resource reclamation.
