Discussion

When a dynamic link is used to include files into a project, InstallShield automatically creates new components for each subdirectory found in the dynamic link. However, the components created are not exposed in the development environment. At first, it may seem that because the components are not exposed in the development environment, they cannot be shared among different projects; however, it is possible.

In the Release View, the Release has a property called Previous Package. This property allows you to specify a previous MSI package. When the build generates new components, it makes sure it uses the same component GUIDs, file IDs, and directory IDs, etc., as in the specified MSI package. This allows the components that cannot be seen in the previous package to be inherited by the new project.
