Summary

Symptoms

Error 2902. Operation ixfAssemblyCopy called out of sequence

Cause

One of the known causes for this error is when the installation contains merge modules and the ProcessComponents standard action is not run during the execute sequence of the installation.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, add the ProcessComponents action after InstallInitialize action and if needed modify existing conditions so the action runs during installation. The ProcessComponents action registers and unregisters components, their key paths, and the component clients and it appears that on Vista and later operating systems, merge modules seem to require component registration in order for the product to be installed correctly.
