This article discusses how to create an InstallShield Project from an existing MSI or MSM file.

Discussion

Using InstallShield Professional or Premier, you can create a project from an existing MSI file by following the below steps:

1. Launch the InstallShield product
2. Select Menu item, File -> Open
3. Browse to the MSI/MSM file
4. Change Open as: from Auto to Wizard
5. Click Open
6. A Welcome to the Open MSI/MSM Wizard pops up
7. Select the option Convert MSI/MSM to an InstallShield Project
8. Click Next
9. Specify a Project Name and the Data File Location
10. Click Finish

If you have a MSI based compressed setup.exe than you can use the /a command-line parameter to uncompress it. After it is uncompressed, you will be able to select the MSI to create an InstallShield Project.

NOTE: Additional languages the installation package supported will not be included in the .ism that is created and will need to be re-added.
