Software Metering - best practices

Hi Folks,

We have the following situation where we want to clear the old data and enable Software metering for 3 months of usage data and 12 months of other data. For monitoring, we selected the following reports Yearly statistics per application, Application installation history, License tracking per computer and Applications per computer and user.

And which reports do you use? What settings do you use for Software metering? What reports do you use to monitor it? How long do you keep usage data?

Thank you in advance for yours reply!

Best regards,

Yana Voznitska

  • Hi Yana,

The retention policy depends on what you need to use the data for.

Usually, for licensing purposes, keeping 3 months of data would be enough to cover the 90-day rule established by Microsoft.

If you also use your metering data for security purposes for example, your security team could be involved to determine a reasonable retention period.

Keep in mind that metering data can take up quite a significant amount of space in your DB (depending on the size of your network) so check out how it affects your storage.

The SLM Console has a setting that defines the metering retention period

  • Hi,

same here - 90 days for the metering data, 1 year for the other history data (not that important IMHO).

Years ago, a finance expert told me that a clever finance department will delete all data as soon as legally allowed. "What does not exist cannot be included into an audit" he said. Speaking of license management: Microsoft for example also checks the last 90 days only, but if there is more data... who knows. 😎

    Regards,

    Axel
