RUN_EXCLUSION_RULESET_DAY is a setting in Snow Management and Configuration Center (SMACC) under Core Settings that can be configured to run daily, on a specific day, or never. This article explains its purpose and impact.
Purpose
The primary goal of this setting is to improve the performance of the data update job (DUJ) by eliminating unwanted data. It works with applications prefixed with "X - ", which are hidden from customers and used exclusively by this setting. These applications have rules targeting non-useful data with generic paths.
How it works
- Never: No software matches the rules for "X - " applications, and they are skipped.
(Except for when the RUN_COMPLETE_RULESET_DAY runs.) - Weekday/Daily: Software can match the application rules. When a match occurs, a mapping between the
Softwarechecksumand theApplicationIDis created and stored in the SQL tabledbo.tblSoftwareApplicationMap, withIsExcludedset to 1.
Impact on DUJ execution time
This setting can both increase and decrease DUJ execution time:
- Increase: Initially, more recognition is required in the "Applying application rules" phase, which is resource-intensive.
- Decrease: Once software matches the rules, this data is discarded early in the DUJ process, speeding up subsequent runs.
Stored procedures that exclude already considered "unwanted" software include:
[dbo].[JobInventoryApplicationConcurrencyUpdate][dbo].[JobInventoryDeviceApplicationsUpdate][dbo].[JobInventoryComputerSoftwareUpdate][inv].[UpdateWebAppMetering][inv].[UpdateMetering][inv].[UpdateComputerOperatingSystem][inv].[UpdateAddonSoftwareFullversion]
Recommended setting
While any setting can be suitable, many users prefer setting it to a weekend day like Saturday or Sunday. This allows the DUJ to run longer during the weekend, ensuring faster performance during the week when minimizing downtime during office hours is important.
Any configuration can be used depending on your environment and maintenance window. The impact on performance is environment-dependent and may be modest. The table dbo.tblSoftwareApplicationMap is used for filtering out unwanted software data regardless of how this setting is configured.
